Sustainable Tourism, a marketing perspective of Victor T.C. Middleton and Rebecca Hawkins

Review "Sustainable Tourism deals with a subject which is of critical importance to the public and private sector practitioners in the tourism industry...This book cuts through the emotional rhetoric [of tourism sustainability] and explains simply how good environmental practice is excellent business both for the marketplace and for the destination. I feel privileged to recommend it."Jean S. Holder, Secretary General, Caribbean Tourism Organization"The great value of this book is not only that it clearly demonstrates that [sustainable tourism] is a feasible goal through marketing, but that it also presents growing evidence of environmental best practice standards already being set by the industry. That in the process it also lays to rest some myths and misconceptions about tourism is an additional bonus for the reader."John Yacoumis, Project Manager, South Asia Tourism Secretariat"I recommend this important new book to practitioners as well as students, and commend its authors for their contribution to a better understanding of environmental impacts and the new partnership delivery mechanisms that are needed."from the foreword by Robert Collier, Vice-Chairman, Saison Overseas Holdings B.V."I found Sustainable Tourism: A Marketing Perspective an impressive work. It is far superior to any other treatments of the issues and more practical too. Everyone talks about sustainable tourism development, but this is the first book to apply the power of marketing to achieve it. It shows, through principles, analyses and case studies, how tourism can grow while destinations maintain, and even regenerate, (the environments) required to support it."Douglas C. Frechtling, Associate Professor of Tourism Studies, The George Washington University, USA"This book is timely and to the point. Middleton and Hawkins clearly document the 'environment and development' characteristics of an industry generating more than 10% of global economic activity, as well as the emerging interest of the market in 'Green Tourism' which will bring a sharp new focus to public and private sector initiatives in this field. It's a valuable guide for anyone committed to sustainable growth."Geoffrey H. Lipman, President, World Travel & Tourism Council'This is a stimulating book which develops new thinking. It adopts a distinctive stance with which some readers will disagree. It is likely to create much useful debate among its intended readership of students, researchers and industry practitioners.'Dr Bill Bramwell, FTS, Tourism Society Journal"The book is an insightful contribution to the topic of sustainability... the reader is provided with a readily accessible, rich source of cutting-edge information"Journal of Vacation Marketing

This book uses the format of a question being asked on marketing, branding or the client-agency relationship to begin each section and then each of the two authors addresses and answers each question. One author is the creative director/owner of a marketing consulting firm/ad agency and the other represents the client perspective.
In my opinion the real audience for this book are those marketing people on the client side who either use an outside agency or are thinking about using an outside agency because they'll gain an understanding of how typical agency-client relationships work and they'll also get a better handle on the psyche of a typical agency.
The book covers such a wide variety of topics that it is hard to not read it and come away with at least one or two new insights. That is really all that should be expected from any book on the topic anyways since so much has been covered by so many other books. Purely the Q&A approach of this book is interesting and fresh and makes compelling reading.
The only questions I had when reading the book are Who is asking the questions and how well do the two authors know each other? At times it seems as though it might be a little contrived but it never loses its objectivity. While it might hint at being a little self-promotional the primary author does not go over the top in using the book as a tool to gain clients for his agency and it does not diminish the value of the book overall.
This is an interesting book and worthwhile reading for those mid- to small'ish businesses considering using an outside marketing firm and those already using an outside firm as it will discuss many issues that relate to the dynamics of the typical agency-client relationship. It also covers many marketing topics and just might provide some unique perspectives from some experienced people in the profession. Large firms who already use big agencies will not find much new or compelling in this work.

Using Computer Networking and the Internet to Grow Your Business, William E. Kilmer

From Booklist Many, if not most, small businesses now use a computer to perform at least one or two basic functions. Kilmer shows why these companies should now consider an upgrade. This is not a technical manual but, rather, a straightforward and clear explanation of the ways small businesses can use computer networks to their advantage. He carefully delineates the benefits of each application he proposes. Kilmer first details local and wide-area networks; he covers networking standards, outlines the components of a basic network, and considers the need for a network server. Nearly half of his book is devoted to ways small businesses can use the Internet to communicate, conduct research, reach new markets, and sell products. Kilmer advises on how to evaluate vendors and service providers, and he discusses planning, budgeting, training, equipment, and security needs. A helpful glossary and Kilmer's logical, step-by-step approach and jargon-free presentation will make this book attractive to those who might otherwise be intimidated by a hard-sell or a too-technical pitch.
