Sustainable Tourism, a marketing perspective of Victor T.C. Middleton and Rebecca Hawkins

Review "Sustainable Tourism deals with a subject which is of critical importance to the public and private sector practitioners in the tourism industry...This book cuts through the emotional rhetoric [of tourism sustainability] and explains simply how good environmental practice is excellent business both for the marketplace and for the destination. I feel privileged to recommend it."Jean S. Holder, Secretary General, Caribbean Tourism Organization"The great value of this book is not only that it clearly demonstrates that [sustainable tourism] is a feasible goal through marketing, but that it also presents growing evidence of environmental best practice standards already being set by the industry. That in the process it also lays to rest some myths and misconceptions about tourism is an additional bonus for the reader."John Yacoumis, Project Manager, South Asia Tourism Secretariat"I recommend this important new book to practitioners as well as students, and commend its authors for their contribution to a better understanding of environmental impacts and the new partnership delivery mechanisms that are needed."from the foreword by Robert Collier, Vice-Chairman, Saison Overseas Holdings B.V."I found Sustainable Tourism: A Marketing Perspective an impressive work. It is far superior to any other treatments of the issues and more practical too. Everyone talks about sustainable tourism development, but this is the first book to apply the power of marketing to achieve it. It shows, through principles, analyses and case studies, how tourism can grow while destinations maintain, and even regenerate, (the environments) required to support it."Douglas C. Frechtling, Associate Professor of Tourism Studies, The George Washington University, USA"This book is timely and to the point. Middleton and Hawkins clearly document the 'environment and development' characteristics of an industry generating more than 10% of global economic activity, as well as the emerging interest of the market in 'Green Tourism' which will bring a sharp new focus to public and private sector initiatives in this field. It's a valuable guide for anyone committed to sustainable growth."Geoffrey H. Lipman, President, World Travel & Tourism Council'This is a stimulating book which develops new thinking. It adopts a distinctive stance with which some readers will disagree. It is likely to create much useful debate among its intended readership of students, researchers and industry practitioners.'Dr Bill Bramwell, FTS, Tourism Society Journal"The book is an insightful contribution to the topic of sustainability... the reader is provided with a readily accessible, rich source of cutting-edge information"Journal of Vacation Marketing

This book uses the format of a question being asked on marketing, branding or the client-agency relationship to begin each section and then each of the two authors addresses and answers each question. One author is the creative director/owner of a marketing consulting firm/ad agency and the other represents the client perspective.
In my opinion the real audience for this book are those marketing people on the client side who either use an outside agency or are thinking about using an outside agency because they'll gain an understanding of how typical agency-client relationships work and they'll also get a better handle on the psyche of a typical agency.
The book covers such a wide variety of topics that it is hard to not read it and come away with at least one or two new insights. That is really all that should be expected from any book on the topic anyways since so much has been covered by so many other books. Purely the Q&A approach of this book is interesting and fresh and makes compelling reading.
The only questions I had when reading the book are Who is asking the questions and how well do the two authors know each other? At times it seems as though it might be a little contrived but it never loses its objectivity. While it might hint at being a little self-promotional the primary author does not go over the top in using the book as a tool to gain clients for his agency and it does not diminish the value of the book overall.
This is an interesting book and worthwhile reading for those mid- to small'ish businesses considering using an outside marketing firm and those already using an outside firm as it will discuss many issues that relate to the dynamics of the typical agency-client relationship. It also covers many marketing topics and just might provide some unique perspectives from some experienced people in the profession. Large firms who already use big agencies will not find much new or compelling in this work.

Using Computer Networking and the Internet to Grow Your Business, William E. Kilmer

From Booklist Many, if not most, small businesses now use a computer to perform at least one or two basic functions. Kilmer shows why these companies should now consider an upgrade. This is not a technical manual but, rather, a straightforward and clear explanation of the ways small businesses can use computer networks to their advantage. He carefully delineates the benefits of each application he proposes. Kilmer first details local and wide-area networks; he covers networking standards, outlines the components of a basic network, and considers the need for a network server. Nearly half of his book is devoted to ways small businesses can use the Internet to communicate, conduct research, reach new markets, and sell products. Kilmer advises on how to evaluate vendors and service providers, and he discusses planning, budgeting, training, equipment, and security needs. A helpful glossary and Kilmer's logical, step-by-step approach and jargon-free presentation will make this book attractive to those who might otherwise be intimidated by a hard-sell or a too-technical pitch. Review Foreword Clarion Review BUSINESS & ECONOMICS Top Market Strategy: Target the Best and Ignore the Rest Elizabeth Rush Kruger CreateSpace 978-1-4486-7957-7 Four Stars (out of Five) Improving the bottom line for any organization involves increasing market share. How do you get to the customers who are going to buy your product? This book's subtitle states the author's strategy--target the best and ignore the rest. In other words, identify the characteristics of your best customers and go after that audience, ending or reducing efforts to reach customers who don't share these traits. Kruger uses the well-known 80/20 principle first introduced by the economist Pareto. She outlines strategies to identify the top 20% of customers who bring the most profit or benefit to a business or organization. By working to replace the remaining 80% of the customer base with more profitable customers, similar to the top 20%, the bottom-line profit can quadruple. This practical text reviews marketing vocabulary and survey methods presented in an easy-to-use format. The effective use of icons highlighting principles, insider secrets, and conclusions make it easy to scan the book for key concepts. The author makes use of tables, charts, and figures to enhance understanding. The chapter on survey research concisely explains sampling, reliability, validity, data analysis, and collection methods. Kruger provides basic background on Pareto's 80/20 principle and its applications in a variety of settings. To better illustrate the 80/20 principle, the author has created a fictitious company seeking to increase its product's market share. The text and its appendices include sample surveys, interview questions, and detailed analyses of the results. It demonstrates the use of Microsoft Excel spreadsheets for data analysis, including the necessary keystrokes. A brief bibliography is included for those seeking more information on the Pareto princi! ple. The author is a successful marketing consultant who has worked with leading corporations for over thirty years. Kruger has also developed innovative marketing software used worldwide. She has taught hundreds of business students and professionals about marketing strategy, promotion, and research. Her consulting company, Strategic Power, is accredited by the Better Business Bureau. Some familiarity with basic marketing concepts would be helpful but not essential for readers of this book. While the author indicates the techniques she outlines could be used by any organization, her illustrations and emphasis is geared to for-profit organizations. Zeroing in on the top customers, identifying their characteristics, and focusing marketing resources on this target group seems guaranteed to bring results. Kruger provides the tools and inspiration to make this happen. Mary Cary Crawford -- ForeWord Clarion Review by Mary Cary Crawford

Many small business owners are trapped by industry pricing and market misconceptions, when they could be compensated for the true value of the product or service being offered. The low price they feel compelled to offer limits their ability to generate profits which, in turn, slows their response to changing customer needs.   The good news is that a business can command almost any price it chooses by focusing on the value—not the cost—to the customer. Pricing for Profit shows businesspeople how to break out of the stranglehold of industry pricing and charge more for their wares (regardless of the competition) without alienating their customers. Readers will learn how to:   • Quantify the value of their products or services • Distinguish between price buyers and value buyers • Bundle their offerings for competitive advantage and increased customer value • Craft a powerful marketing message that communicates value • Generate more unit sales and close more sales overall, at higher prices • Make more money with less effort   Filled with easy-to-use formulas, sample scripts, clear examples, instructive exercises, and more, this accessible and practical guide is a must-read for businesspeople who want to be well-paid for the value they provide.

From Booklist The advent of large discount merchandise and fast-food chains has seen a corresponding demise in mom-and-pop and small-town diners and variety, hardware, and grocery stores unable to compete. Wal-Mart is only the most recent example of a big chain bullying Main Street merchants, but Winninger refers to this tactic by what he calls the "price merchants" as the "Walton Paradigm" (after Wal-Mart's founder Sam Walton). The author, founder of his own Winninger Institute for Competitive Strategy, offers more than 100 practical strategies for independent and small-business owners to use in fighting back. His advice is to avoid price competition and concentrate instead on value-added service and targeting specific and overlooked market niches. This is the sort of book that librarians hoping to emphasize their role as partners in community economic development can point to when they want to emphasize the resources they have available. David Rouse

Ralph Allora has a magic touch with sales materials. I used to work next door to him at U.S. News & World Report, and over and over, I watched him transform and refine rough ideas into pitches that work. He has a unique ability to talk to salespeople and their clients in a way that's intelligent, straightforward and conversational - never stuffy or complicated. Ralph soon moved on from U.S. News to other national publications, but thanks to his book, he's still "next door" to me - I keep Winning Sales Letters on my desk as equal parts how-to manual, reference tool, and style guide. I'll borrow a dictum from the book and "get to the point": Buy this book, for yourself or as a gift. It's an entertaining read that will step up your writing game.

In his new book Great Customer Connections, Rich Gallagher has done us all a favor by calling our attention to the need for a more positive approach to dealing with customers, service people, and indeed everyone in our lives. Positive behavior generates positive results. Speaking from a strong understanding of behavioral psychology, Rich's tenets and the vignettes in his book generate a wonderful teaching manual for customer service situations and indeed for communicating in our day to day lives. A book directed toward business ethics and customer service, I see this book as also a way to teach something we sometimes forget: basic manners when dealing with others. I'm all for encouraging communication skills and re-instigating the use of "Please," and "Thank you," and "May I help you?" in our day to day lives. Gallagher notes that those businesses that are most successful are the ones that provide excellent customer service, that treat all people at all levels in the company with respect, and that know how to react with class to both positive as well as challenging situations. Great Customer Connections is a fabulous learning tool for teaching these communication success strategies.

From Publishers Weekly Thaler and Koval, the CEO and vice-president respectively of the Kaplan Thaler Group advertising agency (KTG), share the secrets of their marketing success. In business for six years, KTG has created advertising campaigns based on a philosophy of the big bang, defined here as a strategy designed to make a brand explode onto the marketplace virtually overnight. Although the authors' advice is targeted primarily toward businesses and other publicists, the glitzy anecdotal writing is witty and informative enough to appeal to those interested in advertising and popular culture. Drawing on many specific examples of their accomplishments, Thaler and Koval describe just how the creative process is triggered by innovative thinking. The AFLAC insurance company, for example, was turned into a household name when a member of the KTG team realized that AFLAC sounded like the quack of a duck. The AFLAC duck raised the company's profile from zero to instantly recognizable. According to Thaler and Koval, big bangs are achieved in an atmosphere where rules are ignored, organization is compressed, chaos is embraced and intuitive thinking is encouraged. In addition to useful tips, the authors also highlight pitfalls that can derail a potential big bang, such as failing to rehearse presentations or neglecting to do appropriate homework on the company being wooed. Lehman started in his career in the mortgage industry, eventually owning his own mortgage company with multiple offices in Florida and Tennessee. The hours were grueling and Lehman did what many others have done, he searched for an opportunity that would allow him to spend more time with his wife and two young sons, work at home, enjoy life as well as replace his current income. As he narrowed his search to areas that would allow him to create a substantial income while enjoying time with his family, he decided to try the Direct Sales Industry, one that had an online marketing formula. Applying some of the same principles as well as some of the new ones he learned in his company, Lehman quickly shot to the top of the first company he was with and, in fact, he became one of the top earners in the field. In 2006 Lehman started his own internet marketing company, developed his own products and held monthly marketing workshops in Dallas to packed conference rooms. His coaching program specializes in showing his students how to market their products and services successfully with an emphasis on creating multiple streams of income, prioritizing time and goals and mentoring others. Over the last 5 years, Lehman has mentored hundreds of people from several different countries, coaching them to successfully establish a target market for their business. According to Lehman, Direct Sales and Internet Marketing are the best ways to create a residual income freeing up their time so they can spend it doing what they enjoy instead of being a slave to their company.
